Quick rule of thumb:
Breathable HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is knitted, not moulded. That gives it a slightly open, mesh-like texture. Air moves through it, and so does rain. It’s the standard choice for pools, decks, playgrounds and everyday outdoor living areas. Good HDPE is also treated with UV stabilisers. That helps it handle months of direct Queensland sun without breaking down.
Waterproof fabric, typically PVC-based, is solid and non-porous. It’s built to keep rain out. That suits commercial alfresco areas, outdoor rooms, and any space you want to use rain or shine.
Neither is automatically better. They solve different problems. If you want UV protection and airflow, HDPE usually does the job. If keeping rain off matters just as much as the shade, a waterproof fabric is worth the conversation.

If you’ve seen UPF ratings on sun shirts or hats, it’s tempting to assume shade sails use the same system. They don’t. UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) covers sun-protective clothing under AS/NZS 4399:2020. That standard leaves out shade fabrics and structures on purpose. Shade fabrics get tested under a different standard: AS 4174:2018 — Knitted and Woven Shade Fabrics.
UVE stands for Ultraviolet Effectiveness. It’s the percentage rating used to describe how well a shade fabric blocks UV radiation, tested under AS 4174:2018.
According to ARPANSA (the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency), shade fabrics fall into three categories:

UVE performance can vary with the material, colour, density, weave and coatings used. Once installed, other factors matter too. Stretching, structure height, size and position can all affect the protection you actually get underneath.
UVE isn’t the same as total protection. A high UVE rating describes the fabric’s tested performance. It doesn’t mean a person under the sail gets that exact percentage reduction in UV exposure. Structure size, orientation, height and how much open sky is visible around the sail all matter too.
A 90% UVE fabric sits at the lower end of ARPANSA’s “Effective” category. That’s a genuine protection tier, not a fail grade. Fabric rated 91–94.9% is “Very Effective.” Fabric rated 95% and above is “Most Effective.” ARPANSA states that fabric rated 97% UVE or higher can offer all-day protection from solar UVR, provided it also protects against sun, sky and reflected radiation. The actual protection still depends on the structure’s size, position, height and coverage, not the fabric rating alone.
Whether 90% is “enough” depends on your site. A shaded courtyard with limited exposure has more margin than an open playground in full sun. Higher-exposure sites usually justify a higher rating.
Sailmaker specifies fabric rated 90% and above. Some colours reach as high as 99%. Every option starts inside the “Effective” category at minimum. Many sit well into “Very Effective” or “Most Effective” territory, depending on colour and fabric. For high-exposure sites, ask which end of that range your chosen colour falls into.
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It’s the weight of the fabric over a set area. That makes it one indicator of density and construction, but it isn’t a quality score on its own.
A higher GSM generally means a denser, more tightly knitted fabric. That can mean better strength under tension, which helps on larger spans. But GSM alone doesn’t tell you how UV-effective, durable or suitable a fabric is for your site. Weigh it up alongside:
A homeowner covering a small deck doesn’t need the same spec as a school shading a large playground. The right combination of weight, weave and UV rating depends on the size and purpose of the structure. GSM alone won’t tell you that.
Colour can influence UV performance. But it’s not a shortcut for choosing fabric. UVE performance can vary with material, colour, density, weave and coatings, not colour by itself. If you’re comparing colours within the same range, check the tested UVE rating for that specific colour. Don’t assume a darker sail automatically performs better.
Light colours — cream, sandstone, light grey, soft blue — reflect more light. That can make a space feel brighter and cut glare off pool water or paving.
Dark colours — charcoal, navy, graphite — often absorb more UV within the same range, and they show dirt less. But construction and weave still do most of the work. A well-made light fabric can outperform a lower-quality dark one.
Comfort underneath also depends on airflow and coverage, not colour alone.
Commercial-grade fabric isn’t simply a heavier version of residential fabric. The right choice depends on the size, exposure, expected use and performance needs of the installation.
Schools, childcare centres, shopping strips and large alfresco areas typically need commercial-grade fabric. These sites often span larger areas, need consistent UV protection across a big surface, and take constant public use. A standard residential HDPE fabric can still perform very well on a home deck or pool. The span and exposure there are usually smaller.
