Galvanised steel posts are the most common choice for shade sails in Australia. They’re strong, resist rust, and handle the sideways pull of a tensioned sail well.
For an average residential sail, 65mm to 100mm square galvanised steel posts are typical. Taller posts or bigger sails need thicker, wider posts.
If you’d rather use timber, choose treated pine or a durable hardwood rated for in-ground use (look for H4 or H5 treatment). Timber posts usually need to be thicker than steel ones – 100mm x 100mm or larger – to carry the same load safely.
Steel is generally the stronger, longer-lasting choice for shade sails, since timber can twist, crack, or weaken over time under constant tension.
A shade sail pulls its posts inward toward the centre of the sail. Angling – or “raking” – each post outward by about 5 to 15 degrees counters that pull, so the post stands straight once the sail is fully tensioned.
If posts go in perfectly vertical, the tension slowly drags them inward over time. That leads to a leaning post, a sagging sail, or worse – a total failure in a storm.
As a rule of thumb, bury about one-third of the post’s total length. A common Australian standard is:
Bigger sails, taller posts, sandy or soft soil, and high-wind areas all call for deeper, wider footings. If you’re unsure, ask a structural engineer or local installer – this is one detail worth getting right the first time.
For a standard 400mm-wide, 800mm-deep hole, you need roughly 0.1 cubic metres of concrete per post – about 10 to 12 bags of premix. A typical four-post sail needs around 0.4 to 0.45 cubic metres total, or roughly 44–48 bags.
Larger, deeper holes for bigger sails will need more. It’s worth buying a few extra bags – running short partway through a pour is a bigger problem than having leftovers.
For a permanent sail, concrete footings around steel or timber posts are the standard, strongest method. For a lighter or more temporary sail, screw-in ground anchors (long steel screws driven into the soil) can work well, especially in soft ground.
Ground anchors go in faster and skip the curing wait, but they hold less load than a properly poured concrete footing. Use them for smaller sails or short-term setups – not for large, permanent installations.
Aim for at least 2.5 to 3 metres of clearance between the ground and the lowest point of the sail. That’s high enough to walk and move furniture underneath, while keeping the sail close enough to block strong midday sun.
Vary the height of each corner slightly. A flat, level sail collects water and sags. A sail with one or two corners set higher sheds rain and looks better too.
Tight – but not overtightened. A shade sail should be firm enough that it doesn’t flap or wobble in the wind, with no wrinkles or loose fabric.
Too loose, and the fabric flogs around in the wind, wearing out the stitching and seams fast. Too tight, and you risk tearing the fabric or straining the posts and fixing points. Aim for firm, even tension across every corner – pull out the wrinkles, then stop.
Leave a small gap – around 10% of each side’s length – between the fabric corner and the fixing point. That gives your hardware room to work and lets the fabric stretch slightly over time.
Sagging usually comes down to one of three things: not enough tension, all four corners set at the same height, or a sail that’s simply too big for its posts.
To fix it:
Correct tension and solid anchor points are your best defence. A tight sail on well-set posts, with good-quality stainless steel hardware, handles normal wind easily.
For extra protection:
Common fixing points include dedicated steel or timber posts, a structurally sound part of your house (like a wall stud or eave beam), an existing pergola or carport frame, and roof rafters. A standard Colorbond fence generally isn’t a suitable fixing point for a tensioned sail – more on that below.
Yes, if you fix it to a structural part of the house – a wall stud, eave beam, fascia backed by solid framing, or brick with a proper masonry anchor. Never fix it to thin cladding, guttering, or decorative trim; those aren’t built to carry the sideways pull of a tensioned sail.
Use a heavy-duty bracket with coach screws or bolts into solid timber framing, or chemical anchors into brick or masonry. If you’re not sure what’s behind your wall’s surface, ask a builder before you drill.
You can drill and screw into a Colorbond fence post – self-drilling metal screws go in easily, with no pilot hole needed. But most fencing suppliers and installers don’t recommend attaching a full tensioned shade sail to a Colorbond fence.
Here’s why: a Colorbond fence and its footings are built to handle wind blowing against the fence panels, not the constant, concentrated pull of a tensioned sail corner. Over time, that pull can bend the post, crack the footing, or tear the fence apart.
If you want shade near a Colorbond fence, install a dedicated post next to it instead, sunk into its own concrete footing. Save the fence itself for lighter jobs, like shade cloth or hanging pots.
Use a purpose-made roof rafter bracket, not a generic screw eye. Find your roof rafters or trusses first (a stud finder or the pattern of the roof sheet fasteners will show you), then bolt or screw the bracket directly into that structural timber or steel – never into the roof sheeting alone.
Once the bracket is fitted, flash around it properly to stop water getting in underneath. Because a mistake here can cause a roof leak, this is a job worth handing to a professional installer or roofer.
Full no-drill installation really only works for small, lightweight, or temporary sails. Options include:
Yes, but only for light loads. Strong “pot” magnets can hold a small, lightweight shade sail, banner, or decoration onto a Colorbond fence or metal post with no drilling at all.
They’re not strong enough to hold a large, permanently tensioned shade sail – the constant pulling force is more than a magnet can grip long-term. Save magnetic hooks for small, removable, or seasonal pieces.
Attach the sail directly between existing strong structures instead of installing new posts – for example, from your house wall to a garage wall, or between two sides of an existing pergola. This saves the cost of posts and concrete footings.
The trade-off is flexibility: your fixing points are wherever those existing structures happen to be, so the shape and size of your sail may be limited. Every fixing point still needs to be structurally sound enough to handle the sail’s tension, so check this before you buy.
Shade cloth is cheaper and easier to install than a shade sail, but it has some real downsides:

Shade cloth is much lighter than a shade sail, so it’s far more forgiving on a Colorbond or timber fence. Use eyelets sewn or punched along the cloth’s edge, then attach with:
